KempenStroom builds solar roofs and solar parks to generate large-scale sustainable electricity in this region. A lot of electricity, because we are going to use more and more electricity. Also from wind turbines, because solar parks alone cannot generate enough energy to meet demand. This also requires large-scale energy storage.
In a few years, KempenStroom wants to supply electricity to its members. And, you deliver what you have left over at home to KempenStroom. Kempenstroom ensures a fair electricity price. It will be less expensive than you are currently used to because self-generated sustainable energy is simply less expensive. So an independent energy supplier, separate from fossil fuels. And KempenStroom is a cooperation: so the members are in charge!
Is that possible? Yes, that is possible, but a number of steps still need to be taken and we hope that the legislation will indeed be amended. So it won't happen overnight, but it could happen within a few years.
KempenStroom
KempenStroom is a cooperation of residents from the Kempen and surrounding areas that is committed to the local generation of sustainable energy. To this end, KempenStroom wants to focus on developing, building and managing large-scale installations such as solar roofs, solar parks and wind turbines.
These installations will be built within its working area, at locations designated by the municipalities. For the time being, we see the following municipalities as our working area: Bergeijk, Bladel, Eersel, Oirschot, Reusel de Mierden, Valkenswaard, Waalre and Veldhoven.
KempenStroom finds it very important that local residents of those locations are closely involved in the development of new installations from the start, and can also benefit financially from this.
Objectives KempenStroom
Nationally, the Climate Agreement was drawn up in 2019, in consultation with all interested parties and organizations, in which agreements have been made to combat climate change. Generating sustainable energy is part of this. The aim of this generation should be to ensure that 50% is owned by the local environment.
Subsequently, 30 energy regions examined to see how this can best be achieved per region. This has been translated into the RES (Regional Energy Strategy), a document per region that looks at the energy transition: how can more sustainable energy be generated locally, what about energy storage, the energy network, etc. KempenStroom's working area falls under the RES of the MRE (Metropolis Region Eindhoven = 21 municipalities of Southeast Brabant)
KempenStroom Cooperative U.A. wants to work in collaboration with municipalities and developers on setting up projects for large-scale sustainable energy generation, both through solar and wind.
The participation of local residents is very important here, in a broad social sense. This means the involvement of Kempen residents in, among other things, decision-making in municipalities and in project development, in particular the landscape integration of the installations to be built. In its work area, KempenStroom is building long-term cooperative relationships with municipalities and companies.
KempenStroom believes it is important that:
- from the start of the development of new projects, residents, landowners and interest groups are fully and equally involved.
- residents and companies of the Kempen can participate, including financially, in the local generation of sustainable energy and thereby gain a say and share in the profits. In this way, KempenStroom wants to realize the 50% ownership from the climate agreement.
- the profits made in the region will stay in the region, in addition to paying interest on the money contributed by the members, also be co-financing social projects in the vicinity of our energy installations. KempenStroom also wants to support new projects that contribute to the energy transition and/or to making our living environment more sustainable.
